The new purpose built school for complex needs pupils aged 3 – 19 is now open. Formerly Chapel Road school, it recently moved to a brand new £14m building, located at the edge of Old Buckenham village.
The two storey school has a capacity of 110 pupils, and enjoy facilities including 18 classrooms and several specially-designed learning rooms, such as a sensory room and hydrotherapy pool. Governors, parents and staff worked relentlessly over the past 10 years to negotiate and work with the Local Authority to achieve this amazing new building.
Having been appointed by our client we designed, supplied and installed the underfloor heating.
The classrooms, communal areas and sensory areas were a traditional construction. We supplied and installed not only the UFH pipework but the damp proof membrane on the ground floor and acoustic insulation to the first floor to minimise noise disturbance in the classrooms.
We were also tasked with installing varying thicknesses of thermal insulation to accommodate the need for wet areas such as the hygiene rooms to be screeded to falls.
The main hall had a different floor construction as there was a requirement for a battened sprung sports flooring provided by Junkers. The area posed some challenges, as a double height ceiling in the hall resulted in a large heating requirement which underfloor heating would struggle to heat at 200mm pipe spacing. Our team worked closely with the Junkers flooring contractor to find a solution. Instead of the typical Junkers batten spacing of 411mm it was agreed the spacing could be changed to 300mm. This enabled us to have bespoke aluminium diffusion trays manufactured with a pipe spacing of 150mm maximising our output.
26 areas, totalling 3500m²
“After such a long journey I still can’t quite believe that we are finally able to enjoy this wonderful building which our pupils so need and deserve.”
“This project is one of the highlights of my career at Gaia so far. I had an opportunity to go to the school during the 1st half term of their year and it was great to see the finished product in use, and making a difference to children with complex needs. The project team were also a joy to work with. Site was well organised and our installation went very smoothly.”
